After bisque firing (a slightly less hot firing to harden the clay), Montana artist Kate Bertin painted the kitty with a rust-colored underglaze and painted stripes on his face.

First made in Germany in the 16th century, the jugs (which sometimes were used as mugs) were made for 200 years, spreading across Europe and even to colonial America.
